Physician Extenders are radiology technologists who have received additional training and who are certified to assist the physicians in the reading room and with certain imaging and interventional studies and procedures.

       The physician extenders help retrieve pertinent past imaging exams, review the clinical history appropriate to the patient, organize the images for interpretation and help streamline the delivery of care. At many locations, the physician extenders perform routine fluoroscopic exams under the direct supervision of a radiologist.

       By allowing the radiologists to focus all of their attention on the interpretation of images, the physician extenders optimize patient care.

       With the advent of more imaging modalities, better imaging equipment, better patient access to imaging studies and readily available outpatient access, referring physicians are ordering more imaging studies to help them in diagnosing their patients’ health problems. Physician extenders are critical to the smooth operation of a busy radiology practice.
