Trust The Experts
Quantum Imaging and Therapeutic Associates, Inc. is the premier specialty radiology practice in South Central Pennsylvania. The practice provides the most advanced diagnostic and interventional radiology services in the region, along with state-of-the-art radiation oncology services in York and Hanover.

We invite you to explore this overview of the practice and the region by clicking the links below.

Quantum Imaging and Therapeutic Associates is a progressive, dynamic, large, democratic group serving Central Pennsylvania’s premier private hospital systems. Formed in 1997 after a merger of two dominant practices in South Central PA, the history of the practice actually goes back to 1926, when Dr. A.Z. Ritzman became the first Board-Certified Radiologist in Central Pennsylvania. The group has continued to be at the forefront of radiology practices and has long been recognized for its physicians’ skills and dedication to state-of-the-art radiology and radiation therapy.

We currently hold exclusive contracts at three different health systems for the provision of services at their hospitals and outpatient facilities.  These represent almost 1,500 inpatient beds in total. The annual procedure volume is over 700,000 cases.

The three systems are Holy Spirit Health System, Pinnacle Health System and WellSpan (York Hospital).  You can learn more about each of these by visiting their web sites directly: www.hsh.org, www.pinnaclehealth.org, and www.wellspan.org.  At all of our health systems and out-patient facilities you will enjoy the benefits of top notch, up-to-date equipment.  This is a practice where you will have the tools to do your absolute best work.  At these hospitals we are also active in the clinical teaching services of the various residency programs, cancer conferences etc. This is ultimately a great practice building opportunity as many of these same residents establish their practices in the community.  The group is active on many committees at each of the hospitals and has continued to have numerous medical staff leaders at each of the hospitals as well as in regional and national radiology organizations.

Quantum is well regarded in the community as a high quality, innovative practice known for bringing current “university level” radiology and radiation therapy services to our hospitals.  We have a long tradition of leadership at each of the health systems and have enjoyed great administrative support.  At each location we develop a core of physicians serving the needs of the distinct medical staff and clinicians while practicing under the umbrella, quality standards and safety of a large practice.

The benefits of a large practice are numerous: subspecialty expertise for consultation, economies of scale, strong payer contracting positioning, the ability to deploy strategic initiatives with little immediate financial risk to each physician, stability even in the face of a changing landscape in health care and unique flexible scheduling opportunities to name just a few.

A unique Quantum solution to the varying lifestyle needs and age ranges of the physicians in the practice is the “flexible schedule” for shareholders.  Partners may pick any combination of duties within the bounds of meeting the coverage responsibilities of the whole practice.  All rotations and shifts have a weighted valuation and partners target their individual schedules/financial goals.  This allows for a great diversity of lifestyle needs.  The younger partners are as satisfied with their schedules as are the more senior “pre-retirement” physicians.

A rotating elected Board of Directors, chosen from the practice by the shareholders, administers the group.  Since 2001, a non-physician CEO has been instrumental in further solidifying the corporate infrastructure and management of the non-clinical issues.  These activities include: business development, practice analysis, strategic planning, payer contracting/relations, credentialing, pension and profit sharing administration, corporate compliance, marketing, public relations, recruiting, billing and coding analysis, networking and IT, payroll, finance and accounting, and physician scheduling.  This infrastructure has created a stable foundation for the practice and paved the way for many growth opportunities.

The on-going recruitment of skilled sub-specialists to guide the further development of each of our modalities is a high priority for us.  Candidates who have a specific interest but are willing to do a broader scope of activities are the ideal. Not everyone in the practice does everything.  Some do no mammography, others do no intervention, others do no Nuc. Med, or MRI etc. All positions are for partnership.  The partnership track is 2 years to full parity with all shareholders.  The salary and benefit package is very competitive both as an Associate and as a Shareholder for this region. The shareholder track physicians have "target" schedules for the first two years, but can have some flexibility of rotations depending upon specific skills.  Evenings and weekends are covered in shifts and track physicians can expect to work a nominal number of evening and weekend shifts per year.  As we continue to grow and centralize call coverage, we expect the staffing needs for these shifts will be reduced.  First and second year physicians have a generous vacation schedule as well as additional half-days off during each of the first 2 years.   The range of “shareholder” vacation ranges from 6 weeks to 18 weeks.  Please consider that the back-up beeper call schedule is really a back-up to the Central Telerad system rather than actual “night work”.  The quality of the time off is high as you will not just be recovering from a brutal call night.  This allows you to practice the highest quality radiology and still enjoy an enviable lifestyle.  The buy-in is small as there is no “good-will” or A/R buy-in.

A separate angio-interventional call exists among our sub-specialists divided between the Northern and Southern areas of the practice.

York Hospital is a level-2 trauma center.  It is staffed on site until 10 pm.  Holy Spirit Hospital and Harrisburg Hospital are currently also staffed until 10 pm.  We anticipate that this evening shift burden will decrease as we move more readings electronically to the Telerad center during the evening hours.  After 10 p.m. each night, all the sites are linked into a central location.  This site will be responsible for the acute care of radiology coverage at night, mainly CT and US.  By centralizing the call, fewer physicians are actually “on call” for the overnight responsibilities.

We have established a “Tele-Rad” center at our corporate headquarters that is currently networked to all our sites. This site is connected by private T-1/T-3 lines.  We have completed construction of a Microwave transmission system at facilities that will substantially increase transmission speeds.  We plan for this to be the base for serving a broader geographic region in the near future as well as improving our operational efficiency and sub-specialization coverage.

QITA has its own IT specialists to ensure the ongoing success of this network. The back-up physicians serve most often for duties needing a physician presence or in rare instances to assist other locations having temporary equipment failure. Our actual back-up call-ins are quite limited.

All of our practice locations have up-to-date equipment in all modalities.  (5 GE Light-speed multislice CT scanners, 1 GE 16 Slice CT scanner, 1 Siemens 16-slice CT scanners, 20 Acuson Sequoia US (some in mini PACS), Siemens and GE Nuc. Med, Multi-headed SPECT, gated SPECT, Coincident Counting SPECT, ADAC Mobile PET (Quantum owned), Siemens Mobile PET, New GE (2001) and Philips Digital Angiography (2002 X2) suites, AGFA Computed Radiography etc., GE PACS with Centricity at HSH, GE Digital mammography X3 etc.  We currently serve as readers for 12 magnets (many being 1.5 T GE Signa short bore LX echo speed plus).  The other health systems have committed to full scale PACS implementation within the next 18 months.  Holy Spirit Health System has recently finished the first two phases of a GE PACS installation including digital mammography.  A GE 1.5T Twin-speed magnet with Excite gradient cardiac package is at one of our magnet facilities and also at Holy Spirit Hospital.

The practice will see a significant expansion and upgrading of its facilities over the next two years. WellSpan Health System has committed to a 40,000 sq. ft. new outpatient imaging center to be completed by the beginning of 2005.  Holy Spirit Hospital opened a fully digital outpatient Imaging Center in May 2003, and opened a $67 million Heart Hospital in October 2003.  This center has a new MRI facility capable of advanced cardiac MRI.  The practice opened a new imaging center in an 11,000 sq. ft. facility.  This is a fully digital out-patient center with the latest GE technology serving as a show case facility for GE.  It contains 4-D US, GE PACS, 16 slice CT, 2 Digital Mammography units with CAD, CR, etc.

We have recently been approached by other hospitals to provide radiology coverage to their inpatient and outpatient centers. Many new opportunities have surfaced in light of our ability to provide “Virtual Radiologist” service through our secure private or virtual private networking. All these are illustrative of the remarkable future growth opportunities at our practice.

However, as the need arises, we are also very close to the major urban centers of the northeast.
NYC: 180 miles; Philadelphia: 110 miles; Baltimore: 75 miles; Washington, DC: 120 miles

There is a local, user friendly international airport 8 miles south of Harrisburg, so air travel is very convenient.  The beautifully restored and refurbished Central Transportation Center in Harrisburg offers easy Amtrak service to center city Philadelphia and NYC.  Harrisburg is Pennsylvania’s state capital and the center of legislative activity. The central location of the Harrisburg-York area has been a very important aspect of developing this area as a major transportation hub for interstate trucking and warehousing.  Many businesses, software developers etc. have found the region to be a great area for their continued growth.  The housing market continues to appreciate at a steady pace.  York, PA has a long history dating back to colonial times and now has become almost a bedroom community of Baltimore. The entire region enjoys steady growth and a stable local economy.  We will provide you with a cost of living comparison index if you wish.
